COURSES 2010

The Kuhmo Music Courses are by now a wellestablished tradition, training gifted budding musicians for 40 years. Though the courses have varied in type with the passing of the decades, the basic principle has not changed. Students at Kuhmo learn not only in their private lessons but also by listening to and playing with others.

In 2010, after an interval of many years, Kuhmo students will once again have a chance to play with celebrated artists at chamber music workshops. Performing with magnificent musicians is the best possible form of further training, supplementing private tuition, so I warmly recommend the workshops to all the advanced course participants. Contemporary music has always occupied a prominent role at the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, and this year is no exception. It is also high time we welcomed composition students to our music courses. The guest composers at this year’s festival are Krzysztof Penderecki and Kaija Saariaho, and now, for the fi rst time, music course students can also attend the composition workshop held by violist-composer Yuval Gotlibovich.

Each would-be student will almost certainly find several suitable teachers among the over 50 eminent members of the Kuhmo faculty. But please remember that each teacher can as a rule take only one or two pupils, so applicants should be somewhat fl exible in their choice of teacher. Many former pupils have reported that the Kuhmo Music Courses gave their music making added impetus all through the following autumn, and some for even longer. Do join our growing band!

Welcome to the Kuhmo Music Courses.
