Matilda Kärkkäinen

Matilda Kärkkäinen gives frequent performances of the piano solo and chamber music repertoire. She gained her doctorate at the Sibelius Academy in 2017. Its subject was the multidimensionality of the piano sonata. Her main teachers have included Marita Viitasalo and Professor Erik T. Tawaststjerna. She continued her studies at the University of Music and Drama in Vienna and at the Edsberg Chamber Music Institute in Stockholm. She gave her first concert in 2009. Kärkkäinen achieved success in the Jyväskylä Piano Competition in 2004 and in the Nordic Piano Competition in Nyborg in the same year, and was also awarded a special prize for best performance of a piece of modern music in the international Ciurlionis Competition in Lithuania before that in 2003. She has since given several premieres, made recordings of these works and performed them on Finnish radio. Matilda Kärkkäinen now also teaches piano at the East Helsinki Music Institute and is a chamber pianist at the Sibelius Academy.
