The New Helsinki Quartet got started in 1982, and two years later they won two quartet competitions. In 1994, the group came second in the London International String Quartet Competition and in 1997 they were awarded the Nuori Suomi ('Young Finland') prize. Their success at venues such as London's Wigmore Hall and at numerous festivals has established their status in the world of music. Regular tours have taken them to such countries as Belgium, the Netherlands, Greece, Germany, UK, Japan, the USA, Australia and Israel. In the 2012–2013 season the quartet celebrated its 30th anniversary playing all the Beethoven quartets in Lahti, Tampere and Helsinki. The New Helsinki Quartet have had many outstanding teachers, including Risto Fredriksson, Eli Goren and Peter Csaba. They have also studied with the Amadeus, Takács, Chillingrian and Britten Quartets.
