Zu viele Noten Mozart

(Zu viele Noten Mozart) is the verdict Mozart got from the powerful, ignorant King Joseph after the premiere of his opera Die Entführung aus dem Serail. Much like the disdainful sultans when addressing the harem beauties, designed for their pleasure only, Amadeus is said to have answered – As many as are needed, your majesty... What he didn't say is that there were even “more notes” on the same subject. Sketches and even an opera in two acts to be precise. And they disappeared till Constanze Mozart (looking for some merchandise to sell) discovered them after the death of her husband. Hidden but not lost. Three of them – three beautiful dreams of “elsewhere” which Mozart thought nobody would care about...

Look Forward
“In the Soviet Union, the artists, our architects of the soul, have the best potential for looking forward to the fulfilment of proletarian rule. They should actively support the class struggle against bourgeois decadence. No effort should be spared to uncover the formalistic traitors among us. Our society does not need them.” A. Ždanov

Alexander Mosolov (1900–1973):
Newspaper Announcements, Op. 21/2-4
Palo, Jumppanen

Quintet in G minor, Op. 39
Daniel, Lethiec, Gebert, Marquise Gilmore, de Groot

“His quintet, written for a French circus, mixes Russian hurly-burly folk music with strains from a Turkish waltz. Comrade Prokofiev has to be more receptive to the needs of the working masses of our country.” Conservatory-level textbook.

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975):
Scherzo (Allegretto) from symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47 (arr. for piano)
Sigfridsson

The right response to just criticism. Performed by Shostakovich in New York on Stalin’s order.

Moisey Weinberg (1919–1996):
Concertino, Op. 42
Kremerata Baltica

Enemy of the people Weinberg was arrested in 1953. Like Shostakovich and Solzhenitsyn, he had his little rag tag bag prepared for imprisonment or the gulag. Or execution – one never knew....

Fate gave him a little push and instead of being shot or deported he was freed in March. Stalin had died; the same day as Prokofiev, who did not have the chance to see his tormentor gone. Soviet Russia turned from hell into a high-security jail. It was a big step forward.

Enrico Chapela (1974–):
Nanobots
Nisinman, Marquise Gilmore, Laakso, Marković,
H. Kärkkäinen

Chapela writes about the challenges of composing for bandoneon with its own secretive codes:
"I knew and loved this sound from my Astor Piazzolla recordings, of course, but had no idea whatsoever of the working principles of such an instrument. In panic, I sought the help of a former student and friend who happens to be one of the bandoneon players in the Mexican Tango Orchestra. With his help (and endless hours of head-scratching) I cracked the code that governs the key positioning system.

“I then realized that I had to use the resultant pitches from this code to compose, not only to make it playable on the bandoneon, but also to reveal the crazy pitch architecture that bandoneon players have in their heads. So, the tango instrument became the central axis that the other instruments gravitate towards, letting the harmonies be dictated by its fingerings."
Boosey & Hawkes, news April 2011.

Liszt associated the second movement of this concerto with the image of Orpheus (himself at the piano) taming the Furies (the strings) at the gates to Hades. And since the idea had merit, he didn’t stop there with his daydreaming…

Words about Sounds
It is our job to teach sounds to talk. Inside a piccolo there could be a Petrarchan sonnet, hidden and waiting to be whispered. In the silence of the woods, the winged syllables of a poem, the insanity of a beautiful soul, the colours of the seasons, everywhere there is music… And there where the mystery of sound starts, the journey of the soul is not far away…

All (you wanted to know) about Gidon Kremer
The importance of a performer does not lie in his/her astronomical fee or in his/her elegantly wrapped media image. It is in the musical literature he generates, in helping us to open our eyes to neglected beauty. One performer stands towering over the century. He has discovered or rediscovered Lourie,Gubaidulina, Pärt, Kurtág, Piazzolla, Weinberg, Schullhof, Schnittke, Kantcheli. He has diverted the promoters from their money-making frenzy to listening. With their hearts and minds. The neglected composers he was and is advocating became, like Bach in the hands of Mendelssohn, unquestioned masters. Almost like Coppelius the enchanter he gave them all a second life… Here is all about Gidon Kremer.

The rich get richer and the poor poorer, such is life. And such is the story of “Moon love'”. Tchaikovsky composed the music, David, Davis, Kostelanetz arranged it, some mysterious writer of music who wishes to remain anonymous adapted it and Sinatra gets (all) the credit for ''his song''.
Don’t get lost in this hall of mirrors, this IS proof that a good score can have as many as six legal fathers.

The Silly Little Mouse, Op. 56
Thomsen, Ham, Gleisner, Lehtinen, Nassauer,

It is only human: Shostakovich couldn’t stomach the triumph of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. Anyway he was “banned”, allowed only to write film music as punishment for his decadent tendencies. The result – a deliciously light little score full of humour and tenderness made to please or to survive or both... And even more ‒ it exudes a bliss seldom encountered in his music. A sweet smile, maybe like Mozart's behind the tears.

Some of Schubert’s works were not to Chopin’s liking. According to Liszt, Chopin did not care to hear those whose contours were too sharp for his ear, where feeling was, as it were, denuded. Every kind of uncouth roughness inspired him with aversion. In music as in literature and in everyday life, everything which bordered on melodrama was torture to him. Speaking of Schubert, Chopin once told Liszt, "The sublime is dimmed when it is followed by the common or the trivial."

The dancer Eduardowa, a lover of music, travels in the tram, as everywhere else, in the company of two vigorous violinists whom she makes play often. For there is no known reason why one should not play in the tram if the playing is good, pleasing to the fellow passengers, and costs nothing; i.e., if the hat is not passed round afterwards. Of course, at first it is a little surprising and for a short while everybody finds it improper. But at full speed, in a strong breeze and on a silent street, it sounds quite nice.”

J.S. Bach:
Prelude and Fugue in D minor, BWV 539 "Fiddle"
Pedrini

The Prelude and Fugue for organ in D minor nicknamed ''Fiddle'' may possibly not be the work of Bach. The purists may say it is some shadowy version of the solo violin fugue BWV 1001, but one can easily imagine that it gives intelligent and profound expansion to the original material, since the organ's registers allow far more contrapuntal and rhythmic possibilities than a solo stringed instrument. In conclusion, the organ version of the Fugue is the one which will make some of us feel like Schumann or Mendelssohn. This is the reference...Even if it is better than Bach.

"Great artists don't steal, they just borrow,'' Picasso is reported to have said when taking credit for the discovery of cubism (by his colleague Juan Gris). And Armstrong must have felt the same when arranging Mozart’s ''Ah vous dirais-je maman'' and renaming it "What a wonderful world". The essential point – a new masterpiece was born from the shadow of another, as is so often the case. Hearts and minds are open in the wondrous world of jazz.
